 | Self-marketers
or top talent? This quarter, I’d like
to address an issue that we in the recruiting
industry face all too often: is the candidate I’m
interviewing anything more than a great
self-marketer?
Following is a blog posting
from Seth Godin, today’s go-to guy for all things
marketing. In his entry, he echoes:
“If
you’re trying to hire someone who presents well to
strangers, creates documents without typos, is
good at seeking out interesting new opportunities,
can think on her feet in an interview and can
network with strangers in search of a goal, your
current hiring system is probably
perfect.
Unfortunately, those skills don’t
apply to most jobs.
As a result, we end up
hiring people who are good at self-marketing, not
at what we need them to do.
It
may very well be that this programmer or that
cleaning person or this animator is absolutely
terrible at the things that make it easy to get
hired. Is there anything wrong with that? Isn’t
the entire point of a hiring process to separate
the people who will be good at the job from those
that won't? Why is ’clever cover-letter writing’
or ’willingness to travel across town on spec for
an interview’ a leading indicator of that?”
Seth makes a great point and raises some
important questions – clever self-marketers get
hired instantly and often leave within months. How
can employers differentiate between masterful
self-marketers and top talent?
These
pitfalls are easily avoided using
NewHire. Using NewHire’s
Pre-employment applications and powerful search
and sort functions, you
are separating the
people who will be good at the job from those that
won’t. How?
Ask questions about
work experience and job-specific
skills.
- In cases where a job doesn’t require a fancy
resume or the ability to write a “clever cover
letter,” NewHire provides answers to technical
questions, which allow a deeper view into what a
candidate knows – not just their personal
“polish.”
Collect writing
samples and document design
work.
- If your job requires document design ability
and exceptional written communication skills,
NewHire provides you with candidate resumes and
cover letters in their original
formats. Forget “plain text only”
systems – NewHire lets you see what a candidate
can do with a blank Microsoft Word document.
NewHire also allows you to collect a writing
sample for every candidate, and when a candidate
answers an open-ended question, you really learn
about their written communications skills. At
the same time, you learn if he/she approaches a
problem in a way that is compatible with your
corporate culture.
Gain
insights into behaviors and values using
behavior-based scenario
questions.
- NewHire also enables its users to ask
candidates how they would handle a real-life
workplace situation, thus uncovering who a
candidate is and not
just what they know.
Scenario questions currently being asked in some
NewHire pre-employment applications
include:
- You get a call at 10pm reporting that a key
website is down. What steps do you take to
identify the problem and resolve it quickly?
- Describe your preferred method for keeping
up with hot prospects. How would you expect to
keep in touch with them to further the sales
process?
- What is more important during a sales
presentation, your description of your product
or service or listening to the feedback from
your prospect? Why?
